Both publications claim that Grantland Rice was formerly a legendary sports writer. He was behind many of the worst pathologies in modern sportswriting, but he also had a lot of insightful things to say. Rice’s ability to write in sequence that is in order was a strength. He begins sentences with “On the first play, In that second period, The next period, Once again,” for instance, in “The four horseman.” He precisely explained what was happening in the moment as he wrote the play by play. Rice made insightful comments regarding baseball’s reserve clause in 1913 that weren’t widely echoed until the 1970s. Grantland is well known for the saying “It’s not whether you win or lose, it’s how you play the game.” Yes Grantland sucked because he was only good during the time of his era. He wrote about things that people would not care about nowadays.
